Basically what I want to do is create a shell, make the exterior color a light emitter, make the interior face transparent, and put a point light inside so that the point light is providing the light for the scene, but the Light Emitter surface of the shell makes provides a visible source for the li...

Cathryn, The artists at SCF or Deviantart would probably be more helpful as there are just more people there that do sci-fi I hope others here that do sci-fi will pipe in, but I'm just saying... I would start by studying my favorite sci-fi art to find the images I like, then I would try to recreate...

Another option is to use your background photo in the light and sky options as Set Background. I'm not sure if that option would work for you, though, as I am uncertain if there is a way to easily scale the background visible through window to match reality. Hope this helps. FWIW, you might want to use fredo6's round corners plugin in sketchup(available at the sketchucation plugins forum). Some of the scenes have razor sharp lines on the corners / edges of walls, and other items. That can detract from the realism, in some cases. It adds to the polycount, but not too bad...
