Lovely renders but a terrible lamp for reading beside. No wonder specs are on the table

Thanks for posting the problem & solution.
It's these sorts of issues that can put folk off computers!
I turn on the CTRL locator option on to help find my cursor.

I missed this post still now - a great feature!

They look very high quality, but also poly heavy in relation to the size they'll end up being in a rendered image.
Perhaps offer low poly proxies?

Clip out the sky from the daytime background, and animate the time of day to create the transition?
You could have some additional faces in the background to create more shadows.
