Fletch, No issues rendering "Alpha Mask - Selection Only" on my iMac. Twilight V 2.12.8 Pro. The iMac OS is 10.11.6 . Thought this might help in tracking down the O.P.'s issues.

Honest this is the last one...... :roll: . Dailed the bump down from 0.50 to 0.30 . All other materials and lighting the same as last post. Rendered this one on Easy 9 , 50 passes. Well I've made myself a little crazy with this one. This is the last try at this I think. Easy 10 , 50 passes. About 5 1/2 hours. Used an HDRI and The Pointlight in the lamp. Sort of got to wondering about the bump map for the rock texture also.... Suspect one of the problems is the tonal range across the whole texture image is pretty similar.
