Visible light

Post by maarten_vis » Mon Nov 05, 2018 6:56 pm

Hello friends.

Is it possible to have a 'visible' light cone in Twilight? I mean like at a concert, where you see the beams of light above the stage. Of course you'd need dust or smoke in real life to get that effect, but i was wondering if there is an option that simulates that effect.

Thanks,

Maarten

Hi Maarten_vis,
Welcome!

There is a new Template Material in Twilight V2 called "Volumetric".
You must set up your scene properly in order to use this material, so see the threads below that explain how to use the material properly. You do NOT need to download any material libraries - those were created before we made the Template material available to all. However it's highly recommended to carefully read the threads and download the test scenes provided.

But if you like, you can of course still download the library provided. Read the thread carefully, all the scenes and links are provided.

It's the same principal as the SSS but lacks IOR, reflection, etc, so it looks good when you are outside the scattering volume. However, if you use a point light instead of spot light, be aware that the entire scatter volume will probably "light up" since there is light going, and scattering, everywhere instead of just a narrow cone (this includes the sun)!

Build a box inside of your space that is smaller by a centimeter than the surrounding volume, this is to avoid the surfaces of your volumetric light box z-fighting in 3D space with the interior walls and other surfaces of the space.

Then paint that box with any unused color in SketchUp
Then rename that material to "Volumetric"

Apply Twilight Render Material Template "Volumetric" and use these settings as in screenshot attached.

Make sure light is entering directly from your window into the space.
