Fast Forward Maybe On Mac

Post by tuna57 » Mon Mar 11, 2019 8:07 pm

Running an iMac, late model 2013 ( purchased spring 2014 ) . Upgraded a bunch of stuff on it when I bought it including a NVIDIA GTX 780M , 4096 mb VRAM graphics card. Just went to the NVIDIA site and they show this card has Cuda Cores (1536). Whatever that means..... Question is if I download Fast Forward will it work on this iMac as is or am I going to break something if I give it a go ? :!

We would have to port it to mac first.

Thanks for the quick reply Fletch. Was just curious and did a little digging about the graphics card on my iMac. Evidently there is a small ( really small ) number of Mac users that have cards that would support rendering on the gpu side. Not super techie so I've never quite fully understood what the whole "Cuda" thing is about :! .

Right. You're discovering the reason why Macs are not so popular as the "hype" would have you believe among the true high-powered tech people. They are limited in many ways. It makes sense, if you think about it. You know that the biggest companies are often the slowest innovators. Sure, they have some advantages, and they make a decent product.

I have an Nvidia card on a Mac too. I am going to look at my next Mac being a refurbished 2015 and see if I can get a CUDA card on it for various reasons, and might try denoise on Boot Camp. Anyway, I need to redo my Mac and I need a Mac for particular applications--before buying an additional machine for rendering etc. Worth a try.
I bought a 2018 top MacBook. Took it back. Not worth it and you can't do anything with it as you can with 2015 models and earlier. Even battery changes are a big deal. In the beginning Mac lead the way for graphics, but no more.

Wow. Interesting article. Where graphics support is the issue there's also external card setups I'm looking at, but it all has to be set up right. Not a slam dunk, I'm sure.
