Strange "Artifacts"

Post by tuna57 » Fri Jul 26, 2019 6:55 pm

Pulled model off the shelf for further developing and I'm getting a strange horizontal "artifact" line across the water surface. Has me puzzled. Hope these images explain what's going on.... Any ideas for the cause ?

Here's an image of the model setup in SU

My guess is that it has something to do with using ocean water material on an infinite plane. This could come from how the sky dome is rendering through the infinite water plane.

I would suggest adding a bottom to your ocean. Or - Maybe use a large plane for the water, but not the infinite plane?

Thanks for the quick reply Fletch :^: . I wondered if it that might be the issue. Now it poses a new question... can you use two infinite plans at the same time , and move one say 6' - 8' below the other ?

You can, but render times are great, and nothing is gained... and the artifact will likely still be there.
I would go with normal geometry.

The infinite plane is useful as an infinite "grass" into the distance.
Or as a simply light grey "studio floor" for object photography.
Applying procedural materials, especially those with refraction involved, to it increases unnecessary calculations.
