Help Needed Rendering a Car Engine

Post by jeffh » Tue Feb 09, 2021 5:10 pm

Hey Folks,

I'm making this engine model for a client and can't seem to get a good rendering. It looks too cartoonish to me.
This is eventually going to be put on a T-Shirt and used in a magazine article along with some other views.
Any Ideas on how to improve it?

Material:
08 Exterior Daytime progressive, 1.5hrs
SketchUp Aluminum
Twilight Metal, IOR: 2, Shininess: 5

Environment:
Sky color
Brightness 1
Background color, White
Sun Enabled
Sun Color, White
Hazy 10%
Sun Strength, 4

Thanks in advance!

Your product lighting is terrible - very flat and lifeless.

Light your scene with HDR or use Product Lighting.
Use Material Library "NK Metals" aluminum.
Render final with Easy 09

Subject: Free Studio HDRi Spherical Sky image

Tone Mapping is critical - be sure to use latest Twilight Render with new Tone Mapping algorithm "ACES" - you just set it to ACES and adjust the exposure and gamma.

Thanks Fletch,
I wasn't able to open the files from the tutorial you posted but, I was able to find an HDRI I think might work. I'm using sketchup 2019. I'm not sure what you mean by "NK Metals". I'll post what I'm able to produce.

Your help is much appreciated.
Thanks,

Jeff

When you go to apply material from Library you should have the option to use the NK metals material library. This may be a feature only available in Pro version.

What was the problem? Maybe I can help?
You can still download the free HDR images from the thread (inside of the zip files) and use them. They are in hdr format, not stored inside of the sketchup file.

Thanks for the response, Fletch

I'm using Sketchup 2019 and apparently the files are saved in 2020.

I'll Have to post a link to it. It's a surprisingly large file. Even after purging files and reducing the number of groups.

We have several threads here providing perfect examples of a product in a studio.
I'm linking them below for your convenience.

This one is about shooting jewelry, but applies to all products.

OK - I could not resist so I downloaded a car engine from the SketchUp 3D Warehouse and did some playing around. After some messing around (I had to modify the model by fixing up problems and then move around some parts to make it look like @jeffh's), here is what I came up with.
