LED LIGHTS

Post by Muggle » Fri Jul 09, 2021 2:04 am

Pulling out my hair. I have tried virtually every material setting I can think of, and cannot seem to find a way to light an LED panel. Any help please? One of the materials I tried was emitter, and while I know that takes a long time to render, I still can't seem to get that LED look that I need. The LED panels are the areas between the light blue columns. This render has a LONG way to go. I am just rendering some drafts to see what it looks like before using a higher setting and adding the "tweaks".
Hoping to find a reply in the morning with some help and in advance - THANK YOU.

Most common beginner mistake is having reversed faces.
The light from an emitting surface shines out from the front face. So if you paint the reverse face, the light will shine inside your wall backwards instead of shining into the space where intended.

As usual I knew I could count on your help Fletch. The problem here, and I have not actually looked at the videos as yet, still waking up... is that I am using an older version of SketchUp. I love SU but I don't use it often enough to make the cost of the newest versions financially faesible. I will probably have to do so regardless though as pretty soon a lot of my plugins, will be outdated and dead in the water. Ergo - all I have under my post process menu are "None, Simple, and Linear". Nothing called filmic on there. I am using SU 2017 so a bit of a dinosaur that software.

I learnt my lesson re reversing faces many moons back, so that I do know. Once the coffee settles and my brain starts to tick I will look at all of the videos. I know we have to learn the intricacies of these programmes, but oh how I wish I had a "cheat sheet" for these problems. I actually have a formula if you want to call it that, that you gave me many years ago re outdoor lighting as in a special event scenario, and I refer to it all the time when I have forgotten the settings.

Thank you, and I shall report back as to my success or lack thereof.
Cheers and thank you.

SU 2016 version. Hope it helps. :hat:

Filmic is not critical to get results, obviously, but it is superior quality. Simple will work just fine.

Thank you Fletch!
I ended up by having to kinda jerry rig it, and add some glow in Photoshop, But I did experiment and tried several of the Twilight materials until I found one that sort of worked. Not realistic enough for my taste, but it sufficed. And that's another thing... I don't always remember what template I used on an object but there does not seem to be a way to get that information after the fact.
Going to look at the links you sent now.
Ta!

PS - did not do too badly with the sled though - lol. I would love to be able to have a course on just modeling, and all its aspects and tricks of the trade.
Off to view the tuts. And going to spring for the subscription version of SU. An expensive gift for myself, but I am sure worth it.

PM me a link to the scene, and I can analyze and advise for future reference.

No link - it's all local on my drive. I am paranoid about working online, and which is why when I do get the latest SU I plan on getting the pro version which means I don't have to work online. I am one of those people who keeps a closeable slot over the camera on my Mac.

Thank you Fletch, for now and all your help in the past and hopefully future. It's wonderful to know you have someone you can depend on that you know will come to your aid. A Twilight security blanket.
Cheers!
