Max Rendering Size

Post by Ratwip » Wed Apr 21, 2010 1:43 am

I am trying to render a very large image (6000 pixles) and have been unsuccessful in doing so in Twilight. I have been able to render smaller ones of my project but even they come out blury. I am new so i haven't changed any camera settings. The sketchup model is a very large and complex of a 4 square city blocks with buildings and landscaping. If anyone can help me out with the size problem that would be excellent.

Not sure why you need to render in such a big resolution... :?

The answer can be only approximate because it depends on various factors, especially for 32-bit systems where the RAM is limited...

The maximum resolution depends on:
1.) Your computer specifications. (in particular how much RAM you have available)
2.) Materials used in your specific scene (and also the bitmap resolution of the textures used)
3.) Scene complexity (geometry)
4.) Lights used
6.) Will the computer be used while it render
Etc... etc...

Please remember that both SU and Twilight are 32-bit applications...
In my experience you can render up to max 4K x 4K assuming that the scene does not need heavy RAM usage to store the geometry and bitmaps...
I assume here that your system has enough memory (2 Gb and above)...??

Hello!
Im having the same problem as Frederik.
Im new to Twilight, but licensed it yesterday  .

I need to render at 6000x6000 to put in a A1 paper.

But even in the low+ preset, looks like Twilight cant handle this size.

It "proccess the geometry" and then it says "Complete" and there´s no image...

Anyone knows what its about?

cheers!

As described above, the issue is memory. Large textures are especially problematic in using up memory. If you are trying to reduce memory, the first thing to do is reduce any large textures. (Also purge your scene of any unused materials and geometry).

100px/cm is rather high for this large of a sheet...
if you can go with 80, 75, or less, it will be best. Try a test print of an image at different px/cm and see how low you can go.

Any image over 4000px is a very large image, and will likely hit the RAM wall... however, some here render routinely at over 5000px wide

:totgm: Actually I didn't have a problem...
I tried to help a user and provided an answer regarding render size... ;)

Hello everybody.
I have a question too.
My render will be used on a building sign of 2,5 m x 4 m.
What size should have the render?
Thank you for the advice!

Miguel posted a sort of calculation of needed pixel sizes or various purposes here. According to this, somewhere around 2,500x4,000 pixels (actually somewhere around 2,150x3,440) should be enough (which seems to be within normal RAM capabilities).

Back to the original questions and especially responses like

The required render sizes for various purposes may vary greatly. I have been making panoramic images (with spherical lens) and when viewing these panoramas full screen on screens nowadays "normal" almost for everyone, you need as big images as possible since about 2/3-3/4 of the image is "behind you" and you can only see the rest when navigating around and if I even want to allow them to zoom in... well, you can imagine. a 8000x4000 pixel image is sort of "normal" (or even somewhere around the minimum requirement) for this purpose.

My "workaround" here usually is that I export a cubic panorama (with six, 2000x2000 images) batch rendered in animation mode keeping lighting info to make sure the faces of the cube fit seamlessly.

And of course, I have these RAM issues, too. However how about exporting things into Kerkythea? Kerky now has a 64 bit version that can access as much RAM as you have and you are not limited to the SU environment.

Another solution could be region rendering... ;)
