OK - getting closer but still having a little bit of a problem.

  • Look at the shape of the light on the back wall. It should be the shape of the window.
  • How do I soften the edges of the light on the back wall
  • If I try to move the spot light so that it not coming through the wall, then I do not see it on the back wall at all.
I did look at the camera settings and see how to mess with them to achieve a better contrast and etc. The other stuff is what I am struggling with a little.

Here is a capture of the way it is set up.

Dave, Not sure but I think you have the actual light penetrating your wall. Attaching a couple of pics.

The first pic is what you see when you do what Chris said. Select your light, right click then Twilight V2 > Set Target Light. This is what you see. If you click in the scene where you want the light to shine it aims at that point. I had to use the native move tool to adjust the light a little bit, then used Set Target Light function to re-aim the light. You can see my settings for the light in the Edit Light window.

Second pic is just a quick shot on easy med. to give you an idea of what you get. The only light in the scene is the spotlight through the window.

Side note, the "room" 12' square. I set my field of view to 45 degrees. I'm pretty much backed up into the corner but still get a lot of the room in the view. One more thing you don't want your outside image between the light and your window...

Hope this helps, first time I've actually tried this particular type set up. Hang in you'll get it. We're learning together :^:

Dave , Your definitely making progress. I'm curious how you have your lamp set up in your last post. Sort of figured it would have more impact then it's having. All in all your making good headway. I set up a scene similar to your's and it's cooking right now. When it runs a while longer I'll post a pic of the render and one showing the set up. It's a little different approach as I'm using sun/sky for light through the window. As I said earlier we're learning together and we'll both get were we want to be with practice. Keep it up. :^: A little off topic, if you don't mind my asking, where in North Texas are you located ?

Dave, Sort of missed you asking about getting more light on the back wall. Short answer trail and error. I think as you do it more you'll get a feel for where to place the light. Set up will go easier with experience I'm sure. Posting a quick example for you. To get good light on the back wall I had to raise the light higher than the ceiling and bring towards the front. That allowed me to get a raking angle suficiant enough to get good light to the back wall.
Also had to set fall off to 30 for complete coverage of the window opening. chuck.

Well, making more progress. Starting to "get the hang of it". I think this one is still a further improvement but am sure I am handling the lamp correctly. Did this one at a medium+ render. Also messed with some of the camera settings (like alpha and etc.).

Definitely making good progress. Overall I think your lighting is coming along great, and that's one of the hardest aspects to really do correctly. I also really like the reflection in the window which is also hard to get right. :^:

Thanks Chris. You and tuna57 have been helping me a lot. I did not draw this stuff, I am only using it to try to learn how to use some of the lighting techniques. I still want to make some improvements with the lamp but the other stuff in coming along for me. Still need to learn more about the whole inside environment but again, I see that as practice, practice, practice. So, I will probably have more questions. My next biggest challenge is coming up with the resources to step up to the Pro version. Us retired guys find that a challenge once in a while. :shh:

Again, thanks for the positive feedback. :whoot:

BTW: Any progress in working with Fredo and his Animator plugin?

Yes. I just need to put together a beta build to put on the Animator Beta forum. Hopefully in the next couple days.
