Diffuse Color for objects in rendering

All base colors for materials in your model should match the diffuse color of the object. That is, the color of the object when viewed under a flat grey sky. So that when sunlight hits it, there's a way for it to lighten up. And if a shadow falls on it, it has a way to go darker (most noticeable in the case of blacks).

In this example of the car we can see that the diffuse color of the car may be called "white" by our mind's eye but actually is some sort of light grey:
