Moonlight Effect with Twilight's Physical Sky

Post by Fletch » Fri Sep 11, 2009 8:18 pm

Noticing people like to create twilight shots, evening shots, night shots, etc... they are usually lacking one tiny important light... ;)

Here's a place to start to create a moonlight effect using Twilight's Physical Sky.
  1. Set your Sun in SketchUp where you would like to have the Moon shining.
  2. Set your Sun and Sky Parameters as shown here.
    Sun Color = 255,237,193
Sun Radius (Sunlight Slider) = 10 (use arrow keys on your keyboard for fine tuning)
    Maximum Sun Intensity = 0.8
    Sky Brightness = .2
    Sky Turbidity = 3

After your rendering is complete, be sure to do some polishing of the overall tone/color of the image in an image editor.

Thanks Fletch. Where do you set the sun Radius size?

EDIT - Nevermind...I got it. It's the slider labled Sunlight.

Thanks Fletch,
I was struggling to find a way to do this without using a Spherical or Skyprobe sky. Another post concerning the "yellow sky at night" issue led me to this post, where, as usual, you provided a great solution.
Thanks again. :^:

Be sure you adjust the exposure of your rendering in the Tone Mapping settings. It is critical!

It will depend on several factors, so start with the screenshot shown above and after testing with a rendering, adjust as you think may be needed - ok, V2's environment dialog is slightly different from the screenshot, but I think you can figure it out with a little effort.

Keep in mind that night shots are rare in photography of architecture, more common are Twilight shots - where the sun has just set, but the sky is still bright and colorful.

As written in step-by-step above:
Set your Sun in SketchUp where you would like to have the Moon shining.
Set your Sun and Sky Parameters as shown here.
Sun Color = 255,237,193
Sun Radius (Sunlight Slider) = 10 (use arrow keys on your keyboard for fine tuning)
Maximum Sun Intensity = 0.8 ("sun strength" in V2)
Sky Brightness = .2
Sky Turbidity = 3

However, here's a night scene with uplit trees (uplighting trees) where the moonlight settings are a bit more refined, and are in V2.
Fletch wrote:Here is the scene with four sizes of trees with different lighting setups. These were the first trees that came up in the 3DWarehouse when searching the words "Palm Tree".
Also the environment setup for moonlit evening.

USE RENDER SETTINGS LOW FOR TESTING, AND MEDIUM OR MEDIUM+ FOR FINAL IMAGE.

Here is a Swimming pool at night scene. Or this updated scene from the same thread: Pool at night scene for download
