New and Improved Ball-in-Cube Material Preview Scene

Post by Fletch » Tue Apr 27, 2021 11:08 am

We have been hard at work on a New and Improved Ball-in-Cube Material Preview Scene
Please let us know what you think! (right-click>view image below for full quality)

This new preview scene is specifically designed for previewing materials rendering with Unbiased Easy 09 (MLT) render setting.
You are invited to test and give feedback, we would like to incorporate this material preview scene into Twilight's Material dialog in the next update.

What is the difference between this and the current "ball-in-cube" preview scene?
Uses Easy09 MLT
  1. Completely revamped lighting scenario
  2. Higher quality model
  3. Redesigned cube 10 cm wide with 1 mm thick walls and solid 12 cm diameter sphere inside.
  4. High quality cubic mapping on cube and sphere resulting in no distortion of square texture maps.
  5. Full width of square texture map shown on each side. (rectangular maps will be "squeezed" to fit the width and height of the 10 cm cube face)

"Why haven't we had this before?"
The other preview scenes were always focused on speed.
This scene is a bit heavier on resources than the previews of the past. It is focused on quality and not speed. It will perform best on higher speed machines. (8 threads or more)

"Why not just light the object with HDR?"
In our testing this did not result in the high standard of quality for lighting and reflections we were looking for.

Annotations on scene setup.

Scene updated in post above with 3 modifications:
X,Y,Z axis arrows
Smoothed corner between wall and floor in the background.
Entire scene moved to center object on XYZ world origin in proper orientation. - This helps when working with procedurals which are calculated from 0,0,0 (as in with "Floor>Wood" template see example below)
