Materials Editor problem.

Post by Muggle » Tue Jan 31, 2017 9:07 pm

What am I doing wrong please? I have just started working with the materials editor, and followed all tuts and the manual, but somehow the rendered item does not look anything like it does in my preview window? Is there somewhere that I should "commit" the change before rendering please? Most of the time what I attempting to do is make metal actually reflect like metal but it still renders flat.
Thank you.

please post a screenshot or test scene so that we can help in a more active way than simply guessing.

Actually Fletch - since uploading this image I kept on trying (practice, practice, practice) and my materials are looking much better I think! Happy. Compare the gold side tables.
PS - Oh boy! Started this reply last night and never finished submitting it. I did read your reply this morning though and it was very helpful as today I have to create a model of a chandelier composed entirely of mirror pieces.

Thank you

It appears like metal to me.
Please post example image of the metal you desire.
Each preview is under its own lighting condition at a specific scale on a specific shape. Each render preview is intended to be a help in creating the material, but it's impossible for it to simulate the same shape and lighting condition in your scene. This is why we have Interactive Rendering in V2Pro - so that as you make material changes you see it live update in the scene.
That said, you can make perfectly good metals in the hobby version of Twilight Render. My guess is that the shininess of your metal combined with the render settings being used are your two main allys/enemies. So, if you want a polished metal, be sure to increase shininess to over 1000 even up to 10000 or 50000 (mirror). Keep in mind the lower render settings will not have the tracing and anti-aliasing settings high enough for a blurry metal, but the shinier metals will look ok on lower settings.

Follow up to the other image attached prior. Gold side tables - much better. :)
