Night Renders

Post by derekwood » Tue Mar 06, 2018 6:49 pm

Having recently posted my first night time render, and had some very useful feed-back, I am posting again in the hope that
there is more help out there.

I have used Fletch's 255.163.70 throughout--I am now wondering if I should only have used it for the background lighting.
My biggest problem has been choosing the most suitable level of illumination.
Any helpful comments would be appreciated.

The important thing is to not over-power your lighting. That leads to lighting artifacts and errors that slow the image processing down for the render engine.

It is always most efficient to use Post-processing of your final rendered image to pull out the details and subtleties of light in your scene. Including tweaks to the general overall light color, etc. But you can, before saving your image, use the Tone Mapping adjustments in the bottom right-hand corner of the render dialog.

Save in .png or in HDR format for best results in this regard. Hobby users are limited to .jpg image exporting, but that only limits you somewhat with the post-processing ability, as .jpg is a lossy format.

Night skies are not black - look at any night time architecture photography they are shot at dusk or dawn for a much more attractive sky and lighting for the architecture. Your scene needs moonlight and/or sunset sky feeling.

You need to use Twilight Render Template Pool water - change color for depth color to white. turn off bump so that water is smooth.

Thanks, Fletch for comments.
What I intend doing now is to purchase the fully licenced version, download
any templates and materials, and spend some time working my way through
the available tutorials etc.
Next time I post I should have a proper grip on the subject.
Thanks for your time.
