Restored Radiogram.

Post by Mike1158 » Wed Mar 07, 2018 6:48 pm

When I was about 7 or 8 years old a friends mother gave me one of these rather than throw it out. I spent some time building the house and contents as part of a trip down memory lane. I have been looking through old folders and sorting out textures and models recently after having put my back out and being on the road to recovery I thought I would render this quickly for a laugh. The wood floor will have to go, not really very good but it is just a quick render.

Note, the word Radiogram is made up from two words Radio and Gramophone as it combines both.

It's so great! :D

the low-res flooring texture just ruins it.

Mike... let's bump map things!
Oh... it seems to me that the rail guide for the cover stand are missing.

Thanks folks.

What would you have me bump map?

The floorboards is a poor texture but the radiogram would have a sanded smooth finish so no bump map. No need for bump map on the metal trim either.

"....the rail guide for the cover stand are missing". The radiogram was produced during the late forties. If you mean the lid support which would normally have a sliding lock, fixed. I was just checking light and materials/finish. The floorboards have been changed but I should have done that before submitting the render. An odd reflection region on the bakelite/plastic casing has me flumoxed though. Shiny plastic seems to produce these random oddities. Which occur in the second render.

As mentioned above, a few odd issues but better?

Point lights will reflect in plastic (specular reflections) as a white glowing fuzzy orb.
Use spot lights to avoid this. So my guess is you have a point light to the left of the scene, and it's being picked up in the secondary specular reflection of the plastic.

I should have mentioned before but the camera angle is odd/boring/flat. But the rendering is much better.
I would use a glossy finish with subtle bump on the floor. This would be picked up by seeing the base boards reflected into the flooring. Typically wood floors do not have a dark line like that between the pieces... at least not the floors I've had/seen anywhere.

Thanks Fletch, the angle was an attempt to demonstrate the interior and get as much detail as possible. There is one light in this closed room so no hdri either, the light is the "Twilight_Indoor_2x4(60x120)_200w_Ceiling Light, no alterations.

The wood floor is set to paint, satin but I agree the gaps between some of those planks could swallow the average family in one go. I have tried using a wood texture and the Twilight setting Floor - wood but there is an issue here. I rotated the wood texture but the Twilight setting did not follow the rotation despite the rotation coming before setting the effect in Twilight.

Oh well, back to the scribbling board.
