Dodecahedron

Have wanted to mess about modeling one of these crazy pentagon sided spheres. Finally got around to it and of course had to do a render. 25 passes Easy 10 and minor post pro. Have to play with this some more as time allows.

Cool! Did you use a SketchUp plugin to model the geometry? It's very smooth.

Thanks Chris. I used ThomThom's Quadface Tools and Vertex tools to get the spheres modeled with good topology and smoothed them with SubD.

Very cool. The glow on the inner surface out of the outer shell is really nice. The micro-cracking (without specularity) is also really beautiful. I'm not a big fan of the silver material as it looks fake. It looks to be somewhere in-between a chrome and a brushed metal which just doesn't read as realistic in the image. Have you played around with other metals in this scene? In my experience, metals are really tricky to get to look realistic. Nice studio atmosphere as well.

Nice work! I did one of those when first got QFT and Sub-D, but that was just a modeling test; I didn't actually do a render. Very nice work, especially with contrasting materials of the two Dodecahedrons.

Nice one Tuna :gj: :^:
For a Dodecahedron... a pentapod.

Thanks Frolfer12. Spent most of the time on this in setting up the glowing panels on the inner sphere. Gave it a "Decorative Aquamarine Glass" template out of one of my deep material libraries. Played around with it to get the glow and just tweaked the settings until I got something I kind of liked. Can't disagree with your comments about the metal texture on the inner sphere. It's "Silver" out of the "Metals Ashikhmin MLT" pack in my Deep Material Library. I think it might have looked better with more passes. Planned on trying out some different materials on that but haven't had the chance. Hard drive died on my iMac which is my main rendering machine. When thats back running hope to try out some other materials on this.

SpookyChick, thank you. Have wan't to model one of these crazy thing for quite some time and of course I had to do a Twilight render. Just can't help myself.

Many thanks posodrac. Definitely like "pentapod" it's got a nice ring to it.

Nice! Lovely piece here. :)

If you like this type of modeling you could check out the old reliable dinosaur Topmod for modeling complex mathematical 3D solid models.

Thanks Fletch. Got to say that crazy model you posted is something else. Need to take a look at TopMod. :^:
