Flower Fruit Bowl

Post by tuna57 » Thu Mar 14, 2019 4:12 am

Messing about with SubD the other night. Came up with this crazy bowl. Of course I had to do a render. Used a Translucent Plastic template in the Deep material Editor on the bowl.

Rendered Easy 9, 50 passes, 2200 px wide. About 4 1/2 hours. Post pro in Affinity. Also posting SU shot of how I set up the render.

Nicely done, Tuna57!

People must right-click your rendering > view in new tab to appreciate. :^:

The lighting is a bit flat/unbalanced making a potentially great rendering feel dull. Could use a large soft reflector/fill light to right/behind the shoulder of the camera. Exploration render would help with placement of this one. (search "studio lighting" threads here)

If you want to try something new, try to get the caustics through the glass bowl to show onto the table - try re-lighting /replacing the current spots with light emitting surfaces and render, or I believe it could be simply rendered again with Easy 10 which can render caustics without requirement of area (LEM) lights. This is probably why Easy 10 seems to take 2x longer to render a scene than Easy 09.

The material on the wood is perfect for a cheap laminated furniture wood look. Try the complex reflection templates or wood mapped template and a specular and bump map to take the wood to the next level. Maybe Rangerrick has some tips he can share with us how to get the best wood look. :!

The 2 best threads for learning studio lighting in Twilight Render are here:
1 Best thread ever about product shots/studio shots on Twilight's forum. Includes links to HDR and studios and test files, everything.
2 Jewelry and Product Shots - the Right Light a.k.a. "photo studio" "lighting studio"

But don't miss the Freebies section of the forum, where you can find 3 ready-made studio backdrops for SketchUp.

Thanks RTD, Thanks Fletch and always appreciate your input. Should have posted the raw render also. Might have very well mucked the image up on the post pro side. Planned to play with it some more. F.Y.I. the wood texture is out of the Trespa wood pack that I got here.

it's a great texture - just needs properties to be tweaked a bit... grab a few images from the web that look the way you like and try to match it, that's a great way to learn.

The quality of the wood texture itself looks good, but like Fletch mentioned the lighting is a little flat. With some experimentation Lighting can bring the wood to life :!

Played with this a bit. Darned if I know if it's better or worse..... :!

Made some changes to the lighting, Fiddled with the settings for the wood texture. Changed the bowl from
"translucent plastic" to "glass" template.

Rendered Easy 9, 50 passes. About 2 hours. The only "post pro" on this image was to increase the exposure a little.

It's definitely more bright/cheerful. :)

What are your wood material settings here? I was expecting to see stronger reflection like a lacquer coating like this. (real world photo example)
