Retro Robot

Post by tuna57 » Sat Jul 06, 2019 6:42 pm

Have to admit this was inspired by the Twilight Masters that post on the forum. Don't want to name names as I'm sure I'd forget someone. They know who they are ;) .

Imagine it's decades ago and your in the spare room it's late and your trying to get your creation up and running.....

Rendered on Easy 9 , 100 passes , 2200 px - 1310 px. About 13 1/2 hours on the iMac. Rendered with Sun Sky set up per Fletch's tutorial on rendering a night sky. Three point lights in the room. Minor post pro in Affinity.

Need to mess about with the little lights on the various panels. Have them set as Emitters and not real happy with the result. Some more experimenting to come. :!

Whoa! This is amazing! :rspkt: :hat: :gj:

I'm definitely diggin the retro tech, and especially the posters :D Not sure if I would trust having that robot in the closet tho... who knows when it will get a mind of its own

Just curious tho, how did you do the cables? Those are always a pain to get right, so maybe you have a better solution than me ;)

As for the gauges/panels, if you are going for the retro look just put a small point light at the very bottom of them set to about 2w inc and 2700K, that will replicate the small incandescent lights many old gauges used to have. Just an idea tho.

"RTD" thanks for the positivity !
Now about those cables.... pretty much brute force the things. I work out the basic path with the line and arc tools and then good old follow me. What I will also do is use Vertex Tools to add a bit more curve here and there. The "soft select radius" function helps to keep from getting bad kinks in the cable when moving things about with Vertex Tools.

Reworking some things and experimenting with "very small" point lights instead of emitters on some of the various electric panels. Things look promising..... It's for sure a work in " progress ". :^:

Great looking image! (you have to give it full screen or a dark screen). There's my old Mac!

I really like this scene, Tuna, I'm sure you will get around to tone mapping it, but until then, here's how I would approach it.

This combined one layer of Topaz AI adjust plugin for Photoshop, and one layer of Topaz Adjust plugin.

Thanks pbacot , funny you mentioned the computer.... it's the only thing out of the 3D Warehouse in the model. Was kind of surprised to find it... is kind of poly heavy though ;) , but very well modeled.

Fletch , as always your input is appreciated. I need to remember to check these "darker" scenes on the MacBook. No clue why but they can look pretty good on the iMac , but then look at them on the MacBook Pro and they are way darker. Kind of makes me wonder just how they look on other peoples machines :! .

As a side note ... this first image was save out of Twilight at an exposure of 2.0 , anything higher was "blowing" out the lights pretty bad. Got another one cooking now. Have to see if I can do a little better job on the post pro side. :^:

Don't feel too bad about it Tuna. Dark images are the bane of my existence. It can be tough to get it to look good for a broad spectrum of monitors, and tone mapping doesn't always work the way I hope it will. :? These days I do a lot of it selectively in GIMP. I also raise the power on my lighting to about half again what I think it should be, and wind up just barely getting acceptable light levels. :? I guess I just tend toward the dark side... :totgm:

Great piece of work by the way. Very "Atompunk" genre, and very cool! :rspkt: :hat:

Appreciate the kind words and advice SpookyChick .......

That said ....for better or worse here's another go at this craziness.

Made some minor changes in the model and adjusted the light set up on the "electronics" panels. Same settings on the render , Easy 9 . 2200 px wide. Let this one run 150 passes. Took about 21 1/2 hrs. on the iMac. . Post pro in Affinity. Better ? darned if I know..... :! .
