Enamel Pin Challenge
Enamel Pin Challenge
Inspired by the "Futurama" pin posted by jxmoss. So here's the deal .... model up a "lapel pin" with a "space" type theme and get to rendering.
The modeling is a bit of a challenge due to the finished size of the pin . Knocked this model out , suppose you can call it a shooting star ? Finished model is only about 1 1/2" across. It does have a pin bach with the little closer doodad thing on the back.....
Rendered on Easy 9, 75 passes, 1800 px. x 1534px. Took about 2 1/2 hrs on the iMac. Final image had minor adjustment in the Mac preview window.
Now for some model set up details. The silver is a Deep Editor material, Ashikhmin_MLT - silver . The ground form shiny plastic template. The three colors on the pin are Advanced Reflection - Gloss Tile with the min. shine dialed up to 250.
Lit the scene with an HDRI studio set up.
I find these small things pretty challenging. . About wore out the Exploration Render testing different light set ups. Not real happy with the shine on the "enamel" parts of the pins. Tried different templates and adjusting the shine range. Couldn't seem to find the sweet spot... either a little flat looking or blowing out real bad . Further experiments as time allows.

Re: Enamel Pin Challenge
Hey Tuna, Looking very nice!
I hope everyone will right-click image and view at original size.
I think you can see on real enamel lapel pins that the enamel coating will "cup" or make a "meniscus" at the edges where it touches the metal sides. If this were carefully modeled, I think the reflections would look much more realistic as enamel.

Re: Enamel Pin Challenge
I am trying, I am just not getting it right model wise yet. that image does look good though.
Re: Enamel Pin Challenge
Thanks Fletch. Appreciate the comment about running a bevel on the enamel side..... funny you mentioned it as I thought about doing it and didn't because was guessing it wouldn't make a very big difference at the size this thing is.... well going to find out .... fix the model and ran the bevel on the enamel side and have a render cooking now.
Thanks Mike. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Your right it's as much a modeling challenge
( at least for me ) as a rendering challenge. Had to work all the bevels on a copy that was scaled up 2000x . Still had to do a little repair here and there even working at that scale. Good luck with your pin .

Re: Enamel Pin Challenge
Had another go at this..... added bevels to the inner edges of the pin.
Changed the view for this one. HDRI the same as the first one. Only change in materials was to dial the "min shine" on the "enamel" bits back down to the default 150.
Rendered Easy 9 , 75 passes , 1800 px wide again. Post pro in Affinity. Observation on post pro was I had to be real subtle in any adjustments made. Was real easy to muck it up if I got too "aggressive" with changes. Cheers

Re: Enamel Pin Challenge
@tuna57, thank you for starting this challenge based on my Futurama Pin! Stoked on how your Space Pin turned out and really want to see what other people come up with. I do not know if I will participate yet because I just got done with that Futurama Pin, but I wanted to attach the final rendering to this thread, just in case someone did not know which project you were referencing or is just to lazy to go find it. Haha
Keep up the good work! Love the minimalism on your Space Pin!

Re: Enamel Pin Challenge
jxmoss , thanks for the encouragement. You still win "best pin" hands down. You can also try a different background and experiment with the lighting on your Futurama pin as time allows.... I'm always surprised how small changes can greatly affect the look of these small objects when rendered.

Re: Enamel Pin Challenge
Same angle but different table material and lighting configuration.
