Fortress 3D Reconstruction Movie

Post by artlantis » Sun May 17, 2020 7:35 pm

Hello everyone!
I would like to post several renderings of a movie I recently finished. In it I tried to make a full 3D reconstruction of a medieval fortress in Bulgaria - Assen's Fortress.
I wish also to thank Fletch for the wonderful render software he has made!

Congratulations. We hope you can share the video here when it's available.
The houses are very interesting, they look like they are straight out of a video game. Are they reconstructed from what would have been there at the time? and when would they have been built? Do you know more about their design/construction?

I thought "This "fortress" looks more like a church." Turn's out that it is the church that was part of the fortress complex. Would like to know more about the history of this place. It must have stood against the Turkish invasion of Europe. This is a big part of the story of Croatia and all of the former Yugoslavia/Caucus region.

You could have used the Twilight Terrain add-on to download good 3D data for the actual topography of the land there.

Thanks Fletch.

I work on a 32 bit old laptop and i am not sure if Google terrain will work or me :)

The video is uploaded on my facebook page. The link is below the curch picture. You may check it here as well:

I stepped on the fortress foundation drawings and have made the buildings that might have stood there. Unfortunately there are no any evidences left, either pictures /frescos/ of how the fortress looked like back in those days. So it is more fictional building, whose appearance is partially backed by scientifical evidence.
The houses are typcal for our Bulgarian Revival period /18th and 19th century/. I assume that they have not evolved much from the medieval period /due to the cultural and social seclution imposed by the Ottoman occupators/ and have kept the main features of the Bulgarian home of that distant time.
The fortress itself is hard to tell when and who erected it frst. However Romans, Byzantinеs, Bulgars and finally Turks have had their hands on it. Turks have ruined the fortress as it baceme useless after they subjugated the whole Balkan peninsula.
Now it is named after tzar Assen – Bulgarian ruler from 13th century that had lead the urisings of our people against the Byzantine occupation.

Wow, very long video for your "poor old laptop" great work. :^: :hat:
Thank you for the additional info, very cool project. :)
Our terrain tool doesn't use Google info. But I posted the terrain in .skp format for your usage.
I will save it in SU8 format so that you can open it with any version of SU you have.

Forums are here to share, so feel free to ask if you need something. :hat:

Thanks Fletch! Now i opened it in SU8. I am glad you liked the movie. Modelling took me around 1 month and another 3 months of animation: countless scenes of 3 seconds long each :)
