hmm 70 % gray? I've been working on my own kitchen and my wife says "but the cabinets must be whiter" and indeed they look very dull, compared to photographs of white cabinets. I wonder what I am doing wrong, as I have them almost up to pure white, which I know is wrong.

If you look at a photo a pure white is always grey compared to a lightsource.

It is like taking pictures with your camera, if the color of your kitchen has the same color then the light your picture is overexposed.

70% !!!!
Be sure that ALL of your colors and textures are reduced by 30% brightness and are well balanced in overall general brightness using 70% white as your base starting "white".
Be sure your lights are correctly set to real-world values - what would be a 5 watt led - set to be a 5 watt led.

Now - boost the exposure in the post-process tab of the render dialog as you are rendering your test images.

It is a dance of balance between exposure and light brightness.
