Soft Furnishings

Hi There,

Have attached a rendering that I am looking for some feedback on, especially on the soft furnishing and lampshades. I am trying to make the visual look as photo realistic as possible but feel that the sofa could look better but not really sure how to do fabrics well. At the moment it is currently set as Generic Soft and has a texture, bump and specular. I have tried this as a flat material with texture and bump as well as the same but in Paint Satin and nothing seems to look quite right. The lampshades are currently just a generic flat material with 78% transparency, a texture and a point light set to 100 inside. Any advice? Feedback on anything else within the visual would also be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jenni,
Do you have a licensed copy of Twilight Render? If so we would like to give you access to the resources section.

Furniture - most important factor is the model. For material, a satin paint template would be a good start, link the reflection and bump maps to the SU texture, or provide a proper specular and bump map - depends on the fabric.

I agree that the pillows look great. The fabric on the couch is not too bad, but it is quite square... The most distracting part of the couch is the arm closest too the viewer. You see an abrupt angle on the arm that makes the whole thing look less realistic. A larger radius on all filleted edges of the couch would help a lot I think. Overall very good though.

Looks good.
In Sktechup do you "soften edges" applied to the furniture models.
It looks like that might not be turned on for the softer furniture objects in the scene.

Its under the Window tab "Soften Edges"

good renderings, i feel the cushions needs a little improvement, use sandbox tool of sketchup or Dale Martens plugins.

Enough said about the sofa model, use a good fabric texture with bump map or the texture itself as bump map if suited. I would suggest if the fabric pattern is to tiny and not well seen in the renders you resize it in SU and make it bigger. Always use IES lights for any directional lights but point lights for your table lamps is fine generally. See this about lights too: http://planetpixelemporium.com/tutorialpages/light.html.

Your modeling is fine otherwise and the rendering is very good. The side table with the lamp is positioned strangely and I would use NK metals chrome preset from library for the metal part of it. The floor has too much reflection for my taste and the groove between the planks is unrealistically deep.
