Oli can you explain the use of a hdr studio image.
Have you added a ground plane in SU on that render, or is that grey background all created from this hdr image?

Modeled ground plane.....it was really big so you couldn't see the edges. See image (the chairs are at the bottom corner)

The floor was a mid grey colour with plastic satin template....shininess 20.

Here is where I got hdr images from:

http://www.hdrmill.com/Freebies.htm
http://www.cgindia.org/2006/06/download ... -hdri.html

I think the one I used was from the last link. It's called studio026.hdr

Set as sky probe, sky brightness 0.7. Sun light disabled. Simple tone mapping (i find the colours richer using this tone mapping, maybe im wrong). Preset 08, although I am going to test 08 vs 09 vs 10

Hope this helps

Here are the test renders.

I rendered for 5 minutes on presets 08, 09, 10

HDR lit, no sunlight.

Obviously preset 08 is fastest, but which is the best?

Oli has generously agreed to share this scene if you would like to render it.
Please read this thread carefully from the beginning and you will find the Lighting HDR and a link to the wood material.

The probe isn't included in the zip file, it looks like.

If it was, you'd probably still have to "relocate" it in the light editor, as the path would most likely be different.
