Colour correction/management.

Post by Mike1158 » Mon Apr 08, 2019 11:19 am

I spotted a reference to Filmic blender, an alternative colour management. Looks promising and seems set to improve Blender no end. What next?

Tonemapping has received a lot of attention in the last couple of years. It's a pretty heated debate as it is essentially subjective. Filmic, making renders look like film, is very in right now.

On our end, there are some new (ish) tonemapping functions that we could look at integrating into TWR.

I only ask because from my testing days, there is always another new 'thing' being suggested which for the most part come to nothing or remain in the commercial film world for a decade or two. Always difficult to know which new 'thing' is in the realms of reality and which are pure speculation/looking for backing. :hat:

Agreed. I know tonemapping can make a huge difference in video games where it can be used to effectively set a mood. I suppose the same could be said of still rendering but if you are shooting for realism, I guess the usage is a bit limited.

For simply balancing colors there seem to be a lot of tools to choose from. In my humble experience, I have tried not to get too hung up on it, since I cannot control how the image is viewed. I look at it on one monitor, and then switch to another and the color's very different, and printed it's different in another way. The client looks at it briefly on their phone, and that's it (I exaggerate).

Nothing to get hung up about but, it is interesting to see just how folk will try to stir up demand for a product or method. I could not honestly see a difference that could not be put down to the render adjustment available to any render program or user.

Definitely. I always adjust exposure, then twiddle with the final image or even put it through a filter for some more extreme effect, and get it the way I'd like it. But I've eventually felt the finer adjustments are just for my own amusement.
