Music from your country

Post by flipya » Wed May 12, 2010 8:54 pm

Hello peeps.

I was thinking how there's a lot of music that doesn't cross the borders from the country it's made in (ok, dragostea din tei is an exception). And it really is a shame. There's music made over here (Holland and Sierra Leone) that's pretty awesome. And whenever I'm abroad in, for example, Poland or the UAE I hear the most awesome songs that never make it outside the country. I'll post a couple of Dutch ones here, and hope others will follow with their local tracks :D

Voicst, Anouk, Racoon (every letter in racoon is a single link ;) ), but also Caro Emerald, Sabrina Starke and Pete Philly & Perquisite.

Sorry for not including electronic music, but if you enjoy that genre like I do, you probably already know the Dutchies (Ferry Corsten, DJ Tiesto, DJ Mason, Armin van Buuren, Erick E, Fedde le Grand, junkie XL, Rank 1, Vincent de Moor etc).

Really curious what's hot in your country, please copy-paste some links to music by artists near you :D

Nice Tunes from Voicst and Pete Philly. Unfortunately the tube-links to the others dont work for me in Germany (EMI content no longer available, er huh?)
Cant contribute much to your specific request... only if I would pretend to be coming from the following countries: Jamaica, Trinidad, Martinique, Spain or Greece.
There are vast numbers of gifted artists in Reggae, Soca, Zouk, Flamenco and Rembetico that never get international attention...

So true. Feel free to post some of them, even though they're not German :D

Shame about EMI cutting you off btw :?

awesome idea, thanks!

well, if you never leave the States you never know what gets out and what does not... you pretty much assume it's escaped somehow.

so surprisingly, in Croatia, no one seems to have heard of Jack Johnson... has Holland? (same song, Ben Stiller odd video version)

Living in Holland you doubtless know of Gabriel Rios of Belgium/Puerto Rico, but Americans have likely never heard him, and would love him! (so I hope he qualifies) (your Caro :^: link reminded me of him ... don't know why... she's great - thanks!)

Since hardly anything gets out of Croatia, it's easy to give you something from here you've never heard before... I don't know what you'll think of them... :)
This is authentic Croatian Country Music... Lidija Bajuk - Zora djevojka
Traditional a cappella music from Dalmatia, Croatia (called "Klapa")
What they listen to today (this was the big hit last summer...) Severina Gas Gas
Another (more annoying) one... was huge a few months ago... Zmija i Zaba ("I am the snake you are the frog")

Ooooh this is so much fun, sharing favorites :D

Jack Johnson had a few high positions in the charts over here. One that sadly never made it was his cooperation with Rhythms del mundo (more famous for the Coldplay and Kaiser Chiefs remixes they did for the same album).

Gabriel Rios was introcuced to us through some commercial, can't recall what it was... Sony Bravia maybe? EDIT: cross that, it was orange juice . Sony Bravia was Jose Gonzalez. Can imagine Caro reminding you of Rios, although I too have no idea why :D Whenever I hear Gabriel Rios I think of Mario takes a walk.

Lidija Baluk sounds cool, though I can imagine you need to understand it for full appreciation. The a capella's awesome! I'm a big fan of vocal folkmusic. Somehow it ticked the Civilization 4 box. Again, don't know why.

LOL Gas Gas reminds me of a reeeeally insane night in a Moscow nightclub  That's pretty horrible. On the other hand, Zmija i zaba is not too bad...

Juggling URLs last night I forgot about an artist that's one of my current favorites, Danny Vera.

I'll upload some West-Africa tunes to youtube soon, tried finding the hits from Sierra Leone, Guinee and Liberia, but they're not there :(

Keep it coming guys, at least dump a link to a song you think we should hear :D

Here's one a capella of completely different sort that I really liked. Unfortunately it appears to be a one-hit wonder. shame.

gave you the female Klapa singers before, here are the males... This one is lovely. Some are not so great. :shh:

Yeah, what would be life without music? And there is so much to discover in the world of music. Fletch, I particularly like the croatian a capella... beautyful!
For "Aint no sunshine" my favorite version is by Ken Boothe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptW6foThQrw

But today I even feel more melancholic than that, so I wonder If you guys ever heard about the greek music called Rembetiko? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rembetiko
There is a film by the same name, listen to one of the songs here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXJQmTSptCc

Kaigomai, kaigomai (I am burning, I am burning)

When a human is born,
a distress is given birth
and when a war is started
the blood is innumerable

I am burning, I am burning
give more oil into the fire
I am drowning, I am drowning,
throw me into a deep ocean

I did swear by your eyes
that I had like the gospel
to get the stab with the knife yo gave me
transformed into a smile

I am burning, I am burning...

Aman, aman…

But you, deep in hell,
break the chain,
and when you pull me to your side
you may be blessed

I am burning, I am burning...

Same here with Idols or X-factor when it comes to groups. Their first or second appearance is awesome, and after that it just fades into nothingness...
Those male Klapla singers are pretty great btw, nice to find so much of their music on youtube.

Shura, thanks for that Ken Boothe version, hadn't heard it before. It's hard to come up with a better version from the top of my head, so you're probably right
And even more thanks for that Rembetiko stuff. Quite heavy, and I'll save the wiki page for tomorrow, but I'll see if I can find the movie over here.

I'm starting to feel a little melancholic myself too, and didn't even need alcohol, just music!
My best friend Daan writes music, some of which I really enjoy. Check out his songs here. The first one on the list, Play, is one he wrote in (if I remember correctly) Cambodia when a local kid borrowed his guitar for a few days and showed real talent. We finetuned it sitting in Africa later that year. There was a ritual we called 'tailgating' where we would get in the back of the pickup-truck with a guitar, a harmonica and plenty beer, and then tried to overpower the crickets. Edit: I've told him on numerous occasions that he should fix his diction, but his response's always been 'this is how I sing English, deal with it' :D

For those who like 'exotic' music, be sure to look at Putumayo. The CDs are available at the bigger recordstores, and they cover music from East-Africa to SE-Asia. If you want to check them out before buying, they are of course also available from the 'online resources' ;)

I said earlier that I would post some Salone music and I will, but here's a real honest Sierra Leone song. Rough lyrics are in the description.

Sorry for throwing the heaviest grenade at you with the first shot ... Rembetiko, especially this song is a tough one. If only all the drunken people out there would know that they dont have to spend their money on booze, just a pair of high quality speakers :) Remember Ice T singing in "Pusher" "...the dope I am selling you dont smoke - you feel"?

Listening to Daan And Seydu at the moment, and my mood brightened up instantly... "Cry for the Children" by Maxi Priest came to my mind and I am really surprised that I could find it on Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UnHyUAA0sE omg, I just realize that I never used youtube to check out the Reggae universe, it is full full full
Everyone of course knows Bob Marley and Peter Tosh and maybe Shaggy and Sean Paul, but have you ever heard of Beres Hammond, Glen Washington, Gregory Isaacs, Freddie McGregor, or Morgan Heritage? Derrick Morgan, Alton Ellis, John Holt, Max Romeo, Dennis Brown, Barrington Levy or Lee Perry?
You could fill a whole book with names that are worth beeing mentioned because Jamaica has developed a very beautiful and strong musical culture that has a huge impact on popular music all over the world since decades.

Shura you should come along next time I go to Salone, music-wise it's bound to be your Mekka
Thanks for the great Reggae-tunes, were many that I hadn't heard before.

Since others posted music in their native tongue, I feel a little compelled to do the same, so here's a very great song by Blof (which will be played at my funeral, whenever that will be), translation of lyrics on demand :D
Another one I love is this one, lyrics in the video

Having a hard time to come up with great songs in Dutch. Most artists seem to choose to sing in English...

Anyway, happy to go see Jamie Lidell (see here and here) tomorrow-night in our nation's music-palace, Paradiso :whoot:

P.S. Was wondering, this was a huge hit in Sierra Leone last year, did it ever reach you? And did you find it as hard as I did (and still do) not to dance to it? Ton up dem speekas!

EDIT: heehee just thought of another 'ethnic' track that was a BIG clubhit over here a few years ago: daddy yankee (imagine hearing this at full volume in a sweat busy club)
