Dell Optiplex 960, Windows XP
Core 2 Quad Q9550@2.83Ghz
Time: 44s

I think there are some odd results, perhaps some of those are run with "fit to view proportions", as if I enable that, I'll get 29s and that is in line with those odd results, or this machine is simply messed up :(

But still Phenom II is rather competitive against a Core 2 Quad. Good value I think.

Sorry Fletch I must have my head up my chair today, what with the good news and all. Did I mention my bank account is expecting? Well today the new pc (all that dual quad core lovliness), may not happen after all.

I purchased and paid for the machine last saturday and the rep assured me I would get a call (today was the stated day) when the machine was ready for collection. Well after sorting out my huge office, all 6' x 8' of it, I got a bit antsi and called the unhelpful line of pc world to find out if there was a delay. The very unhelpful chap on the line called the store to check and then told me that they had no record of the transaction. There's more. I have been informed that the pc I chose has been sold and collected already and there are no more in stock and no likelihood of there being any more. I am very happy with that state of affairs, not.

And I thought today would be a good day.

I know its a bit late....but stay away from pc world unless you have a business account with them. They are terrible and the customer service is appalling. You would def get better prices elsewhere too.

Did you pay by card? Their central system should at least have your card details....if not then your bank will have record of the transaction for sure.

If they do not give you that PC then you will be more than entitled to a better one (if you kick up a fuss, and quite rightly so-loss of earning etc). There's no excuse for this.

You can tell i dont like pc world

Hi Oli,
as an update I have finally got to the bottom of this farcical event. Not 100% happy but I can live with the result.

I have an almost identical pc which has 1 (ONE) chip with 8 cores. I know someone out there will understand the core 2 duo better tahn I but that is just me being an old gart. The new pc, which I have running alongside my ol' faithful, did not have a monitor in the package but I got £110 off a 26" Samsung which is new and boxed, due for collection sometime this weekend. I also got the small collection of software titles I had been looking at and 50 blank dvd's. Probably small beer compared to what I could have achieved after a long drawn out battle but I had to get back to Sara and get her needs seen to. I have not installed much and nothing in the way of Sketchup or Twilight yet so cannot tell what sort of results will be available. Two Nvidia 3870 cards, 4gb ram and a 1tb hdd are the other salient points alongside vista home premium. The windows bit is not really an issue as I pre-ordered win 7 home ultimate a while ago.

I really appreciate folk taking the time to pass on advice, it really is nice to not be entirely on your tod when this kind of thing happens and kind words lift the spirit. Twilight is turning out to be a pretty special place to visit. :rspkt:

Ok, I changed my processor, motherboard and memory. Here's the new test result:

39 seconds (Fit to view proportions unchecked to ensure a 1000x1000 image)
Core i5 750
4 GB of 1333MHz DDR3 RAM installed, only 3GB recognized by XP
Same video card as before, GeForce 9600 GT 512MB

Before: 117 seconds
Now: 39 seconds
Now I have exactly 3x the speed as before, according to this test. Sweet!

Both tests were done with the "Fit to view proportions" box unchecked. If you don't uncheck it, you're rendering a smaller image, the exact size being determined by the proportions of your SU viewport. Please re-test if you forgot to uncheck it.
