Twilight renders a video almost as fast as SketchUp

Post by Ecuadorian » Fri Oct 09, 2009 4:36 am

The trick behind this seemingly absurd result is:

SketchUp uses only one thread during animation rendering  .
I used IBL in Twilight to speed things up

Both tests rendered at 640 pixels wide (The SU one is 480px height, and the Twilight one is 425px in height. This was my mistake  ).

By the way, you don't see defined shadows in the Twilight test because I used an HDRI as the sole source of light.

Miguel, I have a few animations to do soon, I normally use Max, LW, Houdini or even Vue for them, however if these do not need special particles or or 100% correct reflections, but more of a few product demo flv's.
Here is a link to an example of the qualty and animation I need to achieve, so my question is can your animation technique achieve this quality with a reasonable speed, then the next question (animation) is there a animation app out there that works with SU able to perform these movements?

Have you looked on 'proper_animation'?

I've heard of it, but never really investigated as I never thought of SU as a serious animation tool.

Thanks for reminder as soon as I'm done with current project i will try learn this and hopefully it will work.

There is also another... mover.rb (I think, never worker with these, just some SketchyPhysics).

Ok, I did a test with scene transition = 2 seconds and another with 2 second. In both cases, the movement occurs in half the scene transition, leaving you 50% of motionless time... :? I still can't figure out how to make the movement span from camera to camera, as it happens in the SU viewport.
First test took 18 minutes to render in my i5 with "maximum threads", second one took around 7 minutes with only two threads selected. All were 640x480. I turned off the sun and used only a white sky as illumination. You might want to render an HDRI of your environment for this.
