Twilight 2 crashes on render

Post by muralmaster » Thu Feb 11, 2016 8:28 pm

Windows 10, SU 2016 worked great. Installed TR v2. Crashes immediately after pressing render.
Tried rendering repeatedly, uninstalled and reinstall both SU 2016 and TR v2, but the problem
continues. Error reports read like this:

Report Details
SketchUpAVH5F34.dmp* C:\User\name-1\AppData\local\temp
FNDH3C13.xml* C:\User\name-1\AppData\local\temp
SketchUpUndo-2016-02-11-14_16_35.log C:\User\name-1\AppData\local\temp

Any ideas for fix? Note: had licensed TR v1 in SU 2015 without problems. Deleted SU 2016
after installing 2016. Then downloaded and installed TR v2.

Two possibilities:
A) You've installed the wrong version of Twilight Render. Make sure you have the Windows version (downloadable as a self-extracting .exe, not an .rbz) and that you have chosen the correct 32 bit vs 64 bit installer for your version of SU. For windows there are both 64 bit and 32 bit versions of SU 2016 so make sure you know which one you have.

B) There is a conflict with another plugin. This has happened with a small handful of other plugins. You can isolate Twilight Render by disabling all your other plugins except TWL (restarting SU after of course) and see if it works.

Can you use any of the other features of TWL, such as light placement, material editor, options window, etc.?

Hola, thanks for the reply.

No, I have installed the correct and latest version of TR (exe for windows 10, 64 bit), su 2016. Have also uninstalled all other plugins (import materials, vertex weld, unhide materials, podium v.2.5 plus). Nothing works; Twilight crashes on render. Installed trail version of another renderer to test, it worked. My file size is 634,000 kb (detailed work). Have only tried material editor with one texture). On the other hand, I opened an earlier save of the same file 200,000 kb size. Twilight rendered it on low, render preset at 1000x500 px. But nothing seems to work on my current file. Any other thoughts?

So, Twilight renders other files, but crashes on this particular scene only?
Please open log file, and share the contents after crash.
It is honestly rare for Twilight to crash. Can you describe what happens when it crashes?

Okay, here's the sequence of events (I'm not sure I got the correct log file; can't find library file in
Windows 10); the log shown below is the one specified on the crash report details:

Re: Twilight 2 crashes on render

When the entire model is copy-pasted into a clean file, it renders perfectly as-is.

This is not the first time hearing of this happen, where a file will not render for some unclear reason, but will render fine if geometry is copy-pasted into a new model. :?

Despite our best efforts, the model is simply too massive to be able to debug and locate the problem. The answer would appear to be that it needs to be copy-pasted into a new model. This process did take time and was done in steps.

Following advice on copy and paste on new model, keeping textures to a minimum size and making use of components. File around 250mb. Twilight 2 crashes reduced to 50%. Now breaking the model into two separate files to bring size further down and hopefully eliminate crashes. Unfortunately Twilight keeps crashing on anything with a Targa file. So I replaced the tga files with png files. Well, this fixed the crashes so far but Twilight renders every png in the scene completely out of place. See attached image. Have tried everything I can think of, even performing minor tests, but the results continue to be the same. I really need to get this glitch fix to minimize the misery I've been enduring these past few weeks. Any ideas? Thanks -j

Twilight Render should be able to render tga. Perhaps it is the type of TGA being used. Can you post one of the TGA images that doesn't render?

Rendering displaced images is a known issue that hasn't been solved yet. The workaround is really easy though. Just explode the image to a face. Then it will render in the correct place.

Yes twilight has rendered tga files in previous project (though I never tried them in SU 2016 or with Twilight V2. But in the process of elimination, tga files being last, crashes stopped when I removed these format images, hence the switch to png files. I simply use the same identical files saved as png instead of tga. I hope Twilight finds a fix for this png problem. Yes, the workaround solution worked on a test run, but it goes without saying that's twice the work. Thanks -j

We can't fix it without an example that causes the problem. Please post one of the TGA files that shows the problem.
