Marble Challenge
I set up a "Render This" challenge at SUC for a marble. I wanted to add it here as well,
mainly because I am having the hardest time getting the glass to look right.
Here is a photo of some real marbles:
Attached is a model of a marble I made.
It is a bit different from the one at SUC as I have subdivided the surface one iteration so it is smoother.
Anyway, please post render and material settings so we (I) can learn from this. Have fun.

Re: Marble Challenge
Eric,
Maybe people missed this little gem somehow.
It's so simple, yet a great "twist" on the the classic 3D sphere everyone seems to render at some point.
Hope this is a worthy entry.
You can open my scene and render.
You will need to browse and find the Apt-probe.hdr and place it in the sky slot and you will need to load the IES data file (provided in the zip below) into the light I have in the scene.
I actually had a lamp in there, but had to remove it from the scene before sharing, sorry.

Re: Marble Challenge
a couple others... NO PHOTOSHOP OR POST PRO.
It's basically the same scene you downloaded above - modified the marble a tiny bit.
copied and rotated the marble as a component. Then set focal point on center of marble, and render with Camera F-number on 22.
you can get the new swirly marble here:

Re: Marble Challenge
Dear Fletch, I'm always watching your work. it is difficult to comment on something. Because we ask for your advice. Thank you for sharing your experiences. And I really do not do better than you. Here I see a very good result . Question - can be better. I do not.
Re: Marble Challenge
Thanks Alvydas.
I think just a post to tell someone "I like it" is always welcome... or "have you thought of trying this..."
Here's the file with the scene so that anyone can open the file, and play. This is the "swoosh" scene. (v SU8) (SU7 provided upon request) Remember that it has the Camera F-Number set to 22. To make it render faster in any setting you can make the camera a "Pinhole" type.
For such a tiny scene, it's quite complex and has a lot going on. (so it does not render lightning quick) All the refractions/reflections/caustics/DOF/IBL(HDR) lighting, etc. Did you notice the dual-refracted caustics on the yellow part next to the large bubble?
Remember to download the IES file (with the scene provided in my post above) for the light bulb. Also remember to download the free HDR and make sure to load that into your sky when you open this scene. Save the scene, and then hit render.

I really liked your results, Fletch...unfortunately I don't have time to try myself right now.
