2nd Generation Core Processor

Post by Fletch » Tue Jan 11, 2011 2:35 pm

"Sandy Bridge" is released.

People that can shop Newegg can get a 2nd Gen. Corei5 which is 4 THREADS AT 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) $224.99

2nd Gen Intel Core i7 comes with 8 threads at 3.4GHz (3.8GHz Turbo Boost) for rendering with Twilight for only $329.99
This means that it's base speed is faster than the fastest i7 available from the previous generation which cost 3x the price.

2500K and 2600K come unlocked (for overclockers).

Be sure to check compatibility with your mother board.

Thinking about the Corei5? $100 is a drop in the bucket when you compare the speed of 8 threads vs. 4 when rendering with Twilight. Go for the i7, you will not be disappointed.

If you are still thinking of the Corei5 (4 threads) - you may want to consider the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz $159.99, so you can likely get the motherboard and the processor for the price of only the corei5 above.

Or you can get a 6 core AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 3.2GHz for $229.99 which will far out perform the Corei5 above in rendering, and costs less... and overclockers will get a LOT more speed.

NICE! Wish I had the budget for a new i7!

I just finished a build with the AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz that you mention. Out the door, the computer with Win7 Home 64 was just under $600, and it really rocks! Much faster than the old Core 2 I was using up until then...

I think I'll be content for a while with my new but now old i7 870, but that is very cool.

I'd hate to be stuck in a lift with those two

After 3:14 my eyes glazed over
I don't drink these days as i'm allergic to alcohol.
I breakout in handcuffs!
