San Carlo alle Quatro Fontane

Post by mdaia313 » Sat Apr 16, 2011 7:10 pm

Good day all.

I've used Kerkythea for about a year. Recently purchased Twilight and have been learning how to best use the program.

My latest project is to model one of my favorite buildings ever constructed, Francesco Borromini's San Carlo delle Quatro Fontane. It is still in the early stages, and it has been a great learning experience to study this building.

Oh My... That is one of my favourite Baroque buildings (I kept giving whole classes on it when I was teaching art history).

Come on, please, more renders (hell renders - lots of shots from everywhere even in native SU)

And please, post something here, too!

(Fletch, Chris, will you now forgive me for deriving traffic onto another forum?)

You're building that in SketchUp?!
:hat:
We will help any way we can to get you the renders this one deserves. ;) This shot's looking great. :)

The Jubilee Church Revisited thread may have some good tips on rendering this genre of space.

Thank you kindly gents. :)

It is a challenge, but lots of fun. Gaieus if you have any in-depth information that could help please do let me know. I am for all intents and purposes reverse engineering the building from photographs and plans on the net. I would be most grateful.

Right now I'm working very hard on getting the coffers done for the smaller half domes. I have the system down to get them onto the model but I am struggling to get the right scale/size.

Thank you Fletch. I will read through the Jubilee Church thread once more. There's a lot I can learn from all of you here :^:

Lastly, for your viewing pleasure, here are some shots straight form SketchUp without any post pro other than resizing.

Interesting work. :^:
Here you have a couple of schemes scanned from an old book. Hope it's useful. :)
P.S. It is not 'San Carlo delle Quatro Fontane' It should read 'San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane' or, briefly, 'San Carlino'.

Perfect. I will be enjoying this topic (subscribed to it ;) ).

Unfortunately I do not have any better material. Back when I taught it, I was still using slides - photos I took from books and while they were legit to do this way for educational purposes, I could not keep any of them.

So I will only be a spectator here (maybe of some help with modelling suggestions but for rendering, there are much more knowledgeable folks around here...)
:)

Massimo, thank you, those are tremendously helpful! :whoot: Yes I know the proper name, but for some silly reason I seem to find more material around using the improper "delle" than the proper "alle" go figure  I'll edit the thread's name however.

Well Gaieus, with your knowledge of the building and modelling experience, your critiques will be invaluable through this process.

Little update.

I've been fervently studying the drawings massimo posted as they are far better than any other material I've had to work with.

As such, I'll be re-starting the model once more, for the 7th time  However, I feel confident that the end result will be much more faithful to Borromini's masterpiece than all my previous attempts.

Keep it up!

I have just had to re-start a project (well, only for the third time) as the client provided inaccurate data. Worst is that I cannot bill them for this!
