Perforated Metal

Post by Gareth » Wed Nov 16, 2011 4:22 am

I have a project which will be using perforated metal screens with a printed image similar to those shown on this link http://www.locker.com.au/architectural/pic-perf.html

Creating a perforated metal by modelling it isn't an option because SketchUp simply can't handle it. There is a perforated metal in Kerkythea, but it isn't what I want, unless there is way to adapt it.

Anyhow, if anyone has any bright ideas I would appreciate it.

Cheers,

Gareth

Gareth I can't see exactly how the grid is made (too small images) and sorry for the quite rough image, it was made really quickly. Anyway if you need something like this:

it is pretty simple with a layered material in Kerkythea.
Tis is how the material is made:

In this way the grid mask is unrelated from the image and you can change or scale the grid texture while the image will remain the same size.
Of course you need to place the texture correctly in Sketchup.

Hope this helps. :)

Thanks massimo and alvydas.....but what you are suggesting is exactly what i was afraid was coming my way...!!

...i simply don't grasp those concepts (i am a 'Hit and Run' renderer...!!)

...but i guess it's time for me to get my head down and bum up and learn...

You have both been very helpful, thank you.....i'll try and give it a shot..!

Footnote : i shudder when i see the word 'Map' appear......and when it is prefixed by either 'Normal', 'Diffuse', 'Specular' or 'Clip' i get scared and watch TV instead....!!! :wall:

Sorry, that seems so difficult for you. But you have to solve task. Sketchup also has terms such as mesh, edge, face, weld, explode. Sketchup very difficult? Wishing success and patience. ;)

hi alvydas......hey it's not your fault i'm dumb...!!....you'd probably laugh if you knew how much i struggle with some of those concepts

what i find intimidating is that you guys find it so easy....after all, look how quickly you and massimo arrived at a solution....in the meantime, i have spent the past couple of hours Googling Clip Maps, Diffuse Maps and Specular Maps and i am still none the wiser and just as confused...!!

you are absolutely correct of course, i have to solve the task....

....how about you come and work for me and then i wouldn't have to bother with this stuff...?!! ;)
