Light mixing

Post by masloprojekt » Tue Apr 07, 2015 2:17 pm

That is my next work in progress. What I'm trying to figure out is how to set light power properly. First img is without changing anything. Fixtures are with IES, LED is emitter, standard sun and physical sky.

Next i've changed light colours and IES power multiplier up to 10.

This one i left overnight it hits 80 pass

Any suggestion ? My guess is that the sun and artificial light do not mix too well even in reality. Is the material lampshade the best in this case? All renders are without postpro.

Greetings from Poland.

Update. Some simple postpro and change of lampshade in "photoshop".

I suggest that you try setting the IES multiplier's back to 1 (assuming they are accurate IES data in the first place), and then adjusting your render's exposure level. If you were photographing indoors, it's quite likely you would have to increase the exposure and the same is true for a render. The benefit of doing this, instead of increasing the light power so much, is that you will probably get better results from your materials, esp. your lampshade.

From there you will have to play around with the intensity of the sun to get the mix of lights you are looking for.

Thanks Chris ! So I've digged out some information again. The idea was to change all my lights to ies for speed up performance, so i found some naked bulb file. I haven't checked it twice at first but now i see that the IES i've used is for TLS E27 3.5W Clear Led Bulb so multiplying it wasn't bad idea/intuition. Anyways i'm still not sure how it works with lampshade material, important is that it actually works, at least i'm satisfied. Below how it works for me.

So i've run some test and it look's like the IES i found isn't the best after all and have quite annoying "blind" spots, moreover power corresponds to 40 Watt Incandescent point light  . More tests shows that speed difference between point light and my IES light isn't significant, so it look's like point light is the best option. I know, I know everything was already pointed out on this forum, but still i'ts quite a fun doing my own research. Now i wonder if replacing my IES with standard spot light with 180 dgr falloff would be faster than standard pointlight...

LEFT - IES; RIGHT - point light

For lampshade - try the Translucent > Leaf setting for your lampshade, then set alpha to 90 for the SU material, and set scattering to 75.
I like that last render with the fire - nice work!
Glad to see you are experimenting for yourself with lights. :^:
