Showing some recent pieces

Post by SpookyChick » Sun Dec 18, 2016 8:45 am

I've been meaning to post some things here for quite a long while now, and never got around to it. There's actually a lot I didn't get around to doing, as I was having to deal with some long term health issues for a large portion of the last three years, and I quit being able to do much of anything, including modeling / rendering.

About a year ago I finally got started again, and have enjoyed improving my skills.

So, here are a few of the pieces I have done in the last year.

A fun piece, playing around with ideas for bridging the gap between starships designed by people with no creativity, and starships designed by art majors.

This one I recently modeled as a way of playing with and noting down some ideas for a sci-fi piece I'm thinking about doing.

This was equal parts experiment and illustration for a scene in a tabletop RPG campaign. Title kind of says it all. The InterStellarArmedForces destroyer Mirai sneaking up on someone through an asteroid field.

:D Hey Cathryn! Great to see you again, sorry to hear of the health troubles.

I really like these! The light sabers are my favorite.

Lighting and materials are always a challenge and getting better and better with them is the journey that is 3D art.

Thanks Fletch! I'm rather proud of them my self. I probably should have put those up in chronological order, to reflect the progress made.
With some of the others, I've been finding innovative solutions as partial workarounds for limitations, like the lack of particle effects. With the right texture, it's possible to simulate certain particle effects.

This image is a good example The "star" there is just modelled with a certain texture and a strong pointlight.

A similar method has been useful for explosions as well. The volumetric effect of that Saucer explosion is all rendered, no postpro on this except for scaling the image down to fit here

And the same with this one

I'm not getting perfect results with it. Still can't manage a proper cloud texture

But I did get some cool effects that (with a little postpro) allowed me to put together a cute but sadly not very realistic galaxy.

Personally, I'm really happy with having modelled and textured the asteroids in these pictures. It took some outside the box thinking in order to manage it with SU's native tools.
