I'm glad you found a workaround for it, but it's really an issue of adding the mask provided with the .jpg in your photo editor, and saving as a .png with transparency channel enabled. (should be the default, by the way) I use Pshop, so can't tell you about Gimp, but as I know many pros with Gimp, I'm sure it's there.
