The model is nothing really interesting, I just wanted to try out an idea.

Very cool lighting effects, done with animated layers? or morphing a bunch of renders?

I just rendered four images, one for each light, layered them in GIMP in "Addition" mode and played with them while recording the action with Camstudio.
You can do a batch render of all artificial lights with Twilight Render by just using scenes and hide/unhide.
Now that I re-read your question, yes, you can say they are animated layers.
