My spin on the "Monolith on the Moon" scene from 2001 A Space Odyssey. Both scenes rendered on Easy 9, 100 passes. Rendered at 2400 x 1235 px. took about 15 hours for each render on my iMac.
Lighting as follows.... Sun-Sky set to sky color. Sky color r-70, g-70, b-70 . 0.600 brightness, sun strength at 2.000. All the floodlight lenses are fake emitters. Small floods have one point light in front with an ies. file loaded for a 3,000 lumen floodlight. The gang light have 3 or 4 point lights spaced out in front. Those point lights have an ies. file for a 20,000 lumen floodlight.
Ran quite a few tests with a bunch of different .ies floodlight files until I found a combo I liked. Also created a bunch of my own textures for the weathered paint and other objects in the model. Post pro was done in Gimp and Affinity.

Re: 2001 Moon Monolith
Looks really good! Put some more work into the post-pro (some bloom/lens flare from the lights, etc) and it would probs be enough to fool me
Only other thing is the ground, it looks a bit flat to me.. Im guessing that for a large open area like that the bump map alone doesn't really cut it.

RTD, thanks for the input. Funny you mentioned adding lens flare. Tried putting it in with Gimp and wasn't liking the results I was getting. Haven't worked enough with Affinity yet to figure out how to do light effects in that software .Find your comment about the ground texture interesting. Actually it looked better in the raw renders but used Affinity's d.o.f. function with the focal point being the monolith. Result was a blurring effect on the foreground dirt. Maybe should have left well enough alone ? Still trying new things to try and improve my post pro so your comments are well appreciated .

The ground looks fine to me and I don't miss lens flair. Nice image mate.

Thanks Mike. Have to remind myself sometimes that everyone "see's" these things a little different.
