Is it possible yet to render 3ds or obj imports into SU such as from Xfrog?

Once you import them to Sketchup, they not 3Ds or obj files anymore ;)

You can, with Twilight Render Pro, reference an external model as a proxy model. So you build something simple in SketchUp and make it a component, then link it to the external proxy model that would replace it when it renders.
However, that model needs to be in Kerkythea .xml format. Many Xfrog trees and plants are available as a library already for Kerkythea. Check Kerkythea.net for more info.
