Late Night Repairs

Post by RTD Laboratories » Sat Mar 16, 2019 7:56 pm

Began working on a new scene, got the main element done at the moment so I figured it's time for a test render. The inspiration came from my job actually, where we spent an entire evening trobleshooting the control cabinets at one of the substations, the moody lighting created this really cozy atmosphere and I thought it would make for a nice scene to render.

First pass with no materials (except for the glass):

A bit about the model:
Nothing special really, the cabinets are modeled from a photo reference, to make things easier I put the photos directly in the model and scaled them to the right size, that way I could take the measurements on the imported photos and have the right size for everything.

All edges have been beveled using the "Round Corner" plugin by Fredo (or was it "Fredo Corner"? He made two and I always get them mixed up :D )

The cables were made with the "Wire bending and routing tool". It took me a while to figure out how to make it in a way that looks good and doesnt take for ever, and this method seems to work pretty well:

Altho not shown in the gif, I moved each cable around a bit to add some randomness to them.

That's about it for now, I have the interior left to finish as well as the outside part. I'll try doing more of these posts where I write more about mo modelling process, maybe it will help someone learn something new, who knows :D

Thanks :D

Got some more work done on this, and the modelling part is basically finished.

As for the workflow, don't really have too much to add here. The wires hanging down from the cabinet door were made with ClothWorks (just ran a sim on a line, then filled it with "Follow Me" tool). The scraps and dirt on the ground were scattered using MsPhysics. And oh, the trees outside weren't made by me since I just got lazy at that point :P

I am loving the lighting contribution to the image. The subtle moonlight falling on the far wall, the lighting seen in the various cutouts, grilles & louvers of the cabinet and desk lamp. Sweet! :rspkt:
