SHADOW DISCREPANCY

Post by Gareth » Wed Jul 24, 2019 7:22 am

Twilight is producing different shadows from that shown in SketchUp 2019.

I had this issue a few years ago and it has surfaced again today on a model of a commercial building.

I whipped up a quick model to show the differences.

This has to do with how far away the "sun" is from the model (parallax effect).

There is an option in the Environment editor called "Corrected Shadows". By checking that, you should get better results.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

I changed the settings as suggested but there is no discernable difference.

I have calculated that the difference is equivalent to approximately +30 minutes.

I should add that I am modelling two buildings at the moment.

The second one, which I have just started, doesn't appear to have the same shadow problems :!

Regards,

Gareth

PS. I apologise for not having posted this in 'Tech Support (V2) where I think it should have been...!

Hello Gareth,
We understand the importance of the shadows, and want to be sure to get them right for you.

The shadows seem to be working here on our test scene. (even without "corrected shadows" being checked)
Please send link to the above test scene and actual problematic building scene to email: support[at]twilightrender.com

Here is our test scene attached, seems ok, so we need the problematic scenes. Perhaps certain locations or times of day are particularly problematic?

We have attached our test scenes, one of them large scale and in feet/inches, and smaller in cm.

Best,

Hi Fletch,

I'll try a few things over the weekend (eg times of day etc).

It's interesting that the problem isn't showing up on my most recent building model.....I'll need to study in greater detail what is different in the models(apart from the buildings of course..! ;) )

Cheers,

Gareth

The further the model is away the origin the shadow parallax problem will become more prevalent.
