Stage Lighting Help

Post by TKasz » Mon Aug 21, 2023 11:07 pm

I do stage design and lighting in sketch up, not the best program, I know. I was hoping to make my renders have a bit more "pop". I was wondering if there were ideal post-process settings that are better than just simple which is what I have been using. These stages are too complex to tweek and render 100 times, it would take me like a month to get a good idea with a full sized stage. Any info helps.

It would be helpful if you could post some images of what you’re doing and pointing out just what you want to have “more pop”.

ACES is automatically pretty good.
Filmic is ACES with some adjustability. After much experimentation, I tend to leave my exposure at 1 or 2, and set post-process type to Filmic, then, I set White point to 1 (default is 2). Then I boost darks by adjusting up from .1 (default) to .2 or .5 up to 1 as needed. For Mids, I start at .5 and up to .6, .7, .8 etc. With Lights I adjust up as needed from .85 up to 1, then 1.5 or 2, and in between as needed.

I want the light fixtures in designs like this to look like they are more so "projecting" light rather than just being "lit". Right now you can tell that they are lit up but you don't really get the feeling of them being a powerful light that is projecting, but more of the feeling that it's just there. It's hard to explain but that's the best I know how to.

Dumb question: did you use the projection style light and set the direction of the projection?

No i use spot lights with varying hot spots and falloffs for the lights and an emmiter texture for the led screens

We have discussed this before, the effect you want is called Volumetrics. It is included as a Template Material in Twilight V2, no need for added material packs.

Your scene requires "fake volumetrics" (that is, they are estimated to save render time, but they are easier to use) That said, unless you have a super computer the scene will take a very long time to render with volumetrics.

See my previous advice below.

That volumetric material will not work with light emitting surfaces and also with over 1000 lights will take an enormously long time to render.

Yes, I suggest rendering this scene with Interior 10 or 9. you can use the new glow post-pro in the render dialog post-process tab for some effect, but you will have to photoshop the volumetrics from the spots, as the volumetric material doesn't work with Easy 9 or 10. Nor with light emitting surfaces.

We did create this light beam effect material, and licensed users can access the expansion material pack for it.
