Windows 32 bits -> 64 bits possible? (8 GB RAM)

Post by WardNL » Thu Oct 22, 2009 6:39 am

Hi guys,

I currently have a AMD F10h Athlon 64 chipset with a AMD Phenom 9650 Quad-Core Processor running on Windows XP.
Windows now only recognizes 4GB of RAM while I have 8GB's.
Would it be possible to upgrade to a Windows 7 64 bit version with my current setup? Or would that just be a waste of money?

Regards,
Ward

Don't think you can do a direct upgrade from 32bit to 64bit, reinstall is in need. But it's worth of the trouble. Win7 64 bit should work fine and actually when you run 32bit program under 64bit windows that program should get a tiny bit more ram to use than in 32bit windows. Go for it.

Yeah, with "upgrade" I actually mean purchase and install Windows 7.
Thanks for your comment.

yes, I would go with Win.7 as well, I use 64 bit vista and it's great... but no guarantees TWL will use the extra ram (32bit app). :|
but any 64 bit program will benefit.

But it occurs to me that you could have more than one instance of SketchUp running Twilight for simultaneous rendering, and in this case the extra RAM might be useful.

That's an interesting notion, I'll try that when I get home from work. Running XP-64 on one machine and Vista 64 on another

There is a 64-bit development version of KT, that is partially tested. But it will take a while to get that ready, because of Thea Render development.
