Reflection

Post by Zacchia » Mon Jan 11, 2010 12:54 pm

Somehow i do not know exactly how to apply reflection like i need to have it. Can someone tell me what i have to set on?
For expamle for 100% Reflection?, for 50%?. Is there a rule? Is there a context between the two values?

it is a combination of the two - IOR, and Shininess.
I can't read German. at all. :| so do not know which Template you have chosen.
Which template you use does matter!

But in general, think of 50,000 shininess (Europeans I think write 50.000) (fifty-thousand) as PERFECT shininess.
think of 7 as about as rough of a surface as you can get in Twilight but still render decently with the presets.

Sorry this is not a 'percentage'. But hopefully that helps.

for IOR -
in general, the higher the IOR the higher the reflectivity of the material.
But it's important to choose an accurate IOR for your material.

It is OK, thanks. So i learn that it matters on which materials i set these values. Befor i was thinking that i can set what i like and it is allways the same, now i know it is not. Specially the Template "Paint gloss" i guess there is not enough reflection on it, i can now chance this.

I saw in another thread you had a picture on the wall.

In order to get this to render as if there is glass covering the picture... build the picture in SketchUp as it ACTUALLY IS. That is, build it with glass over the front. And put it in a frame.

Then apply the "architectural glass>no shadow" template to the glass material in front of the artwork.

I have done this in many images you see on the front intro slideshow or in the gallery... it works lovely.

It seams like you make reflections in the way of specular reflections. In KT i allways applyed reflections the "normal" way. With Color white=100%, black=0% or something between. I think this way is very easy.

  • create a simple scene with about 10 different faces.
  • now apply 10 DIFFERENT materials, one to each face.
  • apply 10 different material templates for which you desire to know how they work
  • apply 1 to each different material in the scene
  • export model via .xml button in render dialog
  • open model in Kerkythea
  • open material editor
  • see how each material is layered.
each one will be done in a physically accurate way. Creating physically accurate materials inside of Kerkythea can be no fun, even for advanced users.
creating them in Twilight is as simple as choosing a template.

adjusting the amount of reflection on a surface is typically, therefore, just a matter of changing the Shininess parameter... or the IOR, or both.

changing the color of reflection to something other than white does work, but may 'break' the material in some cases... so use this option with caution.

I understand and it is good as it is :^: With a texture it seams to work with black and white or not? See attachment. So i can use a color texture maybe? I will try.

yes, but the color will be 'translated' as a grayscale image (I think?!) :totgm: haven't really ever tried that before.

Fletch
I understand how to work with Glass and the image behind the Glass. But i build the whole scene in an architecture program and import this to Sketchup and i do not create anything at all in Sketchup normaly. So i ask you if you can make a template for something like "Pictureglass". This should be applyed just on the image from a picture without needed to build a Glass surface. I would be easier to work. I can imagine that this material is maybe not possible to create? If it is not there is no problem, then i will work with the second surface. If is possible this would be great :^: And maybe a leather template would be usefull too.

oh, I see.
Try this Realistic Water in Twilight Render thread, then... further down it explains about creating a 'solid' glass... hope it may help?
