Rendering transparent objects

Hi,

I'm Aldemar. I'm new to Twilight render forum and the plugin.
I've started learning SketchUp and had some questions about improving my render quality.

I posted initially via SketchUp community my lights enquiry and received some links there which has helped me achieve it's current quality thus far...to the untrained render eye this now is okay to me.

I had a Q' regarding rendering transparent objects, I have some Perspex plinths on the floor ( single face) with no bottom face, I have assigned material colour grey opacity 7, this works okay on scene. However on render it's quite flat - I'am wondering if there is somehow a possibility through settings/material that can depict a glossy/shine to these plinths on render?

I have attached pic

Many thanks in advance
Aldemar

:welcome:
Download Sample Scene Here
  1. Build your box with each face as a solid thickness that is realistic to the actual material, such as 1/8" or 4mm
  2. Apply any color, and rename it to "Perspex "
  3. Make the color pure white.
  4. Apply material Template>Architectural Glass>Common
  5. Set IOR to match that of the Perspex (Plexiglass = 1.5)
  6. Set Alpha to 3 to start, if you want it more opaque, set it up to 5, or 10. If you want it perfectly clear set it to 0.
  7. Bevel the edges of each piece of Perspex the way it would be in real life for an even more realistic look.
See attached images for example.

Glad to see you are posting over here now. Welcome to the forum. I am sure you will get more timely responses (even though Fletch was helping you on the SkrtchUp forum) .

In the long rub, I think you will see a lot very interesting/helpful posts on this forum.

Hi Fletch,
Thanks for your reply and the model.

Unfortunately I dont understand the steps below. To be honest I just saved your material "Perspexglass" into my material library for the model I'm making. I dont know what an IOR is or Alpha settings so you lost me at step 3.
I tried rendering using the material you created with my settings but its coming our white ( its the central table in white)

pic attached.

thanks
Aldemar

Any chance you could share your model so that others could have a go at it?

Thanks for your reply and the model.
It's likely to do with the reflections of the surroundings, the lighting, but more importantly, the model of the plinth.

I provided the model for you, could you just copy and paste it into your scene? Did you inspect carefully how it was made?

Did you build your box with pieces of proper thickness as I described?

Alpha and IOR are shown below.

Hi,

Yeah, I remade it and build it with panel thickness, I also copied your box into my scene and it was still flat white on render.

However after seeing your screenshot, I understood the main issue was I had not assigned the
template material >architecture glass, to the Perspex material from your step by step originally.
So, basically it works perfect -well for me it' fine . I see your quality is of higher level. I'm know rendering on setting 9, and I noticed I dont get those jagged edges as before, so I think all is good!
thank you so much for your help!!!

Yes, your new post seems that you used Fletch’s suggestions and solved the problem. :^:

Now you need to show us the full model (at least like your original post). From what you just posted, it looks like it would be really good looking.

Glad you are now a member of the TwilightRender forum. I think you will really benefit from it. :D

Hi Fletch,
I tried with the setting 9 interior, and its looking rather hazey this render took 2-3 hours.
In comparison to using the lower settings from before the renders then looked much sharper however everything has jagged edges which looks naff. Input would be greatly appreciated.
