Want a modern classic table lamp?
Want a modern classic table lamp?
Hi Twilighters,
I had some free time today waiting for a briefing, so I modeled my favorite table lamp, the Bauhaus Table Lamp.
There are lots of stories around it and it has been bootlegged not only once. You can get the "original" at Tecnolumen, who claim that Wilhelm Wagenfeld is the only true originator. Somewhere I read a german article about the known history of the lamps developement at Bauhaus Weimar during several years and also about the "missing link" in its history. The article says that two other designers have said that most of the design is theirs, but they couldn't really proove it. Funny, but to me this is a good example on how often strong designs are sort of an output of collective activity. Some kind of zeitgeist or universal subconcious...
Anyway, this is also my first contribution to the warehouse

I didn't have much time to set up the render, thinking "ok, lets see how fast I can go just picking some templates". Fast, but as always I was struggeling with the chrome parts. Here it is a library material Chrom from Metal_Ashikim_MLT. The render has no postpro exept blurring the background to conceal the low resolution of the studio.hdr.
Please feel free to play with it.... maybe we could use it for testing lampshade materials?
enjoy

Re: Want a modern classic table lamp?
the "teaser" is that we will provide the model "ready to render"
Shura's model did not have any Twilight Material Templates applied to the SketchUp textures... nor did it have any lights.
Now it's "ready to go" out of the box... and what do you think of the quality?
by the way - Shura, please try the Chrome that comes with Twilight's libraries. Or, in your scene, apply the Twilight Metal>Silver template.

Re: Want a modern classic table lamp?
That lamp is a beaut Shura! And triple yay to TLR for making it a ready-to-render
Some say there are no stupid questions. I'm in the habit of proving those people wrong.
Re: Want a modern classic table lamp?
Glad you like the model! Mr. Fletcher will take it to the master level - I didn't calculate that, but honestly: what else should we have expected?
Here is another shot from my experimenting today... this time silver template is working fine, before it was having a very grainy look.
I was very puzzled when I could not light the inside of the lampshade. Later I discovered, that when a frontface is an emitter material, the backside does not recieve any light (imagine me sticking more and more point lights into the lamp and the inside remaining totally black )
This one took 3h37m with easy 07 no postpro. Lampshade is fake emitter, chrome parts are silver template and the base is plexiglass (why in heaven did I choose plexi?).

Re: Want a modern classic table lamp?
using joint push pull I gave the lampshade a very thin thickness, then used the Library Material Twilight Lampshade "White"... renders quite quickly.
applied a green glass to the edges and clear realistic glass to top/bottom of base. (experimented with the glass color and a real picture until I found the right color for the glass on my computer screen.
I also thinned up the thickness of the glass tube on the shaft.
I made some other little tweaks... it will be available probably tomorrow or monday.
