Yep its a beast! Now I can not wait for my new i7 laptop with 16gb and a 1gb video card. I love the fact that management can see the benefit of having a fast machine.

Just a short introduction: "Hi everyone, I am Juergen from Germany and I am just rendering some Sketchup files for fun. I found a lot of inspiration so far on this forum and gallery and would be glad to get some help to get along sometime - just trying to learn as much as possible so far :-) Here are my configurations..."
The lousy PC with just ATI Radeon HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 who is not able to really help the old processor out ;-) My slowest performer... my be it´s because of graphics cards driver conflicts, because the old nVidia GTX8900 is still visible in the system check?

The better go - a new SONY Vaio Notebook with just 2,4 GHz Intel Core Duo, 64-bit WIN7 and 1 GB VRAM is outperforming the desktop, quite nice...

Another try with my iMac sporting WIN7 32-bit via Bootcamp and a small 256 MB VRAM ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT (which is also BTW working smoother using Sketchup than the HD 4890 - crazy)

Thank you for this, Shura and Fletch!

My result is 2 mins 7s, HP laptop, Core Duo 2.4 GHz, 4G RAM.

A question: if i would use this lamp in big number in a heavy scene,
what should i change on it to get faster results?

Good question! :^:
  1. If you zoom out in the scene, you will see the lamp is sitting in a photography studio. (the very same one that comes with the licensed user's components package)
It has 3 lights that are not actually needed for the lamp to render.
  2. If you look closely at the way the lighting is done in the lamp, there are two lights inside - a spot and an omni. The two are not necessary for the lamp to look good, but they help to make it look great! ...So just turn off the spot, and the other 3 lights in the studio, then re-render.
  3. Or, turn off the omni, and play with the settings for the spot... for instance I may start by trying to set the hotspot for the spotlight to something like 160 and the falloff to 180... but this is just a starting point.
  4. Finally, the brushed gold plate material takes a lot of time to render, I think, in comparison with all the other materials... so if you were to change that to a flat material, and you are not 'up close' to the lamp in your rendering, I don't think you would notice much of a difference in looks, but it would speed up render times on it.

Hi Bob! fast machine. 8-) looks like you may have accidentally tweaked the camera before running the test, which will skew results. Can you maybe give it another shot?
