[WIP]Lava Lamp

Post by rclub24 » Tue Apr 27, 2010 4:05 pm

Hi,

Over at SCF, the latest challenge was to model/render a Lava Lamp. This has resulted in some unexpected results that i need guidance on.

Here's model #1...
Lava-Lamp-Exploded.jpg
Lava-Lamp-Exploded.jpg (42.47 KiB) Viewed 12214 times
And here's the result...
Lava-Lamp.jpg
Lava-Lamp.jpg (84.23 KiB) Viewed 12213 times
As you can see it caused vertical 'bars' around the glass? So i presumed it was due to 'water tightness' or related modeling issue?

Here's model #2...
Lava-Lamp-Exploded-2.jpg
Lava-Lamp-Exploded-2.jpg (42.72 KiB) Viewed 12211 times
And here's the result...
Lava-Lamp-Second-Attempt.jpg
Lava-Lamp-Second-Attempt.jpg (74.73 KiB) Viewed 12211 times
I know i'm making a fundamental mistake that i've not seen or realised. It was suggested to mimic this setup which i did but also another member suggested not to let geometry with different materials applied to touch. This conflicts with the KT Glass modeling setup?

Basically i'm an idiot, here's the file at the end of my post

OK so now im the idiot!

the images show up now, there were just question marks there before!!

is the curved glass grouped? if so try exploding and then regrouping, that sometimes helps. and make sure there's no texture conflicts with coplanar faces. i cant download model to test im going out soz

Indeed, the model is more complicated than necessary... here's a render in under 2mins :D (rendered with new beta)
Note the caustics on the floor from the lava! :^:

  1. deleted the water model completely. ;)
  2. Then painted the front faces of the "inside of the glass" as "water"
  3. grouped them.
  4. opened the group and got them all oriented to point "out" (away from the centerline /centroid of the lamp)
  5. deleted some of the geometry in the upper base group to get out of the way of the light... deleted odd-shaped emitting light plane which was equal to about 50 lights. :!:
  6. set a spot light in the bottom of the lamp (renders much more quickly than emitters and about 100x faster than the odd-shaped emitter plane.)
  7. used White as the color of the glass and Flint template 1% opacity
  8. used White as the color of the water and 0% opacity
  9. used the Wax template at default for the Lava.
  10. used Brushed Metal template no bump. 600 shininess.
  11. scaled the scene accurately :!: (14" high... approx 35cm)
  12. scaled the lava by 1.08 to fill the lamp more and hide top and bottom of the lava model
  13. changed color of base to just be flat grey at 75% grey
  14. inserted the Bauhaus lamp scene and deleted the lamp and purged the file.
  15. used the studio for the lamp to light the scene
  16. created a camera view I liked.
  17. applied a fake emitter material to the reflection screens in the background to get something interesting in the metal reflections. I hid a fake-emit screen or two.
  18. adjusted the power of my spot light and hot spot and falloff until I was happy (about 2mins of work)
  19. rendered prelim at 300x600 on low.
  20. rendered final at 300x600 on Medium+.

Fletch,

You are a gentleman indeed :^:

Excellent feedback and very concise and informative! Amazing really when placed in the right hands. The emitter value I inputted was to pump the effect of the SSS up. Again it was poor approach but seemed right at the time?

The removal of the water component was a 'Eureka' moment for me and spells out how important technique and application is.

Thanks again for your time and expertise, i think the Hrvatsa phrase is 'Bok'? ;)

Rich

[edit] I'd be ashamed to post my 5hr Interior+ render that i did while i sank pints watching Bayern vs Lyon :shh:
