Early Evening Interior

Post by Gareth » Sun Aug 15, 2010 12:54 am

I made this model a year or so ago and have dragged it out again to try a few things. The building is a small Living Room on the ground floor of a 2 storey townhouse.

It has been cooking for 78 passes and I will probably let it run until 150 passes before I finally decide what levels of light adjustment need to be made and what needs to be 'buffed' up in Gimp (the cushions look like they might need to be softened up a little)

The sunset sky wasn't my preference, but since I am unable to change the sky colour in Twilight it will have to suffice for the time being.

Comments are welcome, and your comments may determine whether or not I keep the render cooking, or whether I have the time to start again and make some adjustments

Hi Gareth,

First thing for me are the spotlights, the seems too big, and not enough close to the walls. Is there IES Light effects ?
Try this IES attached.
Second are the materials reflection, try to increase the shininess.

hi fymoro,

Yes the lights are IES.

The floor, lounge, cushions and mosaic tiles are from the Kerkythea library.

I too, am disappointed by the level of reflection on some of the materials.

Personally I use only the easy 9 preset (faster) and to get some reflection, i use the ceramic/porcelain Mat preset and I increase the index of refraction at 3.5 and the shininess at 450.

for shiny plastic objects I increase shininess to 600-2500 depending on how shiny I want. It defaults to 180.

for shiny objects, I also use one of the ceramic templates and increase shininess and/or IOR value.

I also use the stone-polished template and increase its shininess.

The cubes, pillows, and couches are not built correctly, the smoothing looks odd. Take a close look at their geometry, make sure all faces are facing frontward, and make sure the smoothing is done correctly on them, they may need additional geometry for them to look right... low poly furniture will not magically gain geometry when being rendered, in fact, the opposite, it will be REVEALED MORE CLEARLY as being low-poly geometry furniture.

fair points :^: ......it looks like I'll have to spend the time modelling the lounge, cushions and cube....which is what I should have done in the first place (time poor)

....but as for the higher reflections, I am not convinced that the increased render times can justify it (given the render times the two images have taken already, they average approximately 5minutes per pass, my previous tests with higher reflections push it out to around 8 or 9 minutes per pass).........it's not as though I own an i7....!!!....although, I could be talked into it....!

give me a day or so, I'll try and post something a little more impressive

Thanks so far, comments are appreciated..!!

theoretically, the shinier the object, the faster it should render, the blurrier or fuzzier the reflection, the slower it will render... in general.

pillows, cube, and couch appear to be fixed for the most part.
the render is quite good, but there's somehow something strange w/ the lighting, it does not really match well w/ the background outside... still quite a nice image!

At this point, it's a matter of getting the lighting right, I think. (perhaps still the front edge of the seat cushion on the couch facing the camera appears to still have some smoothing issue?)

Don't forget the automatic save feature!
