A Little Piece of Island Comfort

Post by paappleb » Fri Nov 26, 2010 6:35 am

Hey everyone. It's been a while since I have posted anything. The new job has had me hand over fist the past few months. I decided to go back to an old project I did for a client almost a year ago and test out my more refined abilites after the last architectural submission (thanks for all your help Fletch :D.) This was for a $1.3 million bathroom addition. The guy had money to burn and I personally don't know if it ever got built. Oh well it was still awesome to work on!

whoa. now that's a bathroom. :) Very nice renderings!

My only major critique is a small one - the exterior should be much brighter here are some real photo examples.

The other would be that the tiles do not look shiny. Try one of the ceramic templates, and don't be afraid of increasing the shininess value.

Same with wood - I find that wood looks great with Plastic>Shiny template, change it to be 600 shininess. Even without bump or specular maps. This of course all depends on which wood. ;)

I agree the tile looks a bit flat. I will punch it up a bit. The wood is already set at 200 on plastic > shiny so I will give it a swift kick up too. I had it up to 1000 before and it was blinding so I had gone quite a bit more conservative the second go around. Do you suggest a white HDRI background studio image and fore go the beach background all together?

The beach background is fine, but the exposure of it should be a bit more realistic.
Here are some "beach house rental" search pics I found...

Obviously, after looking at these pics, there are a lot of different factors that determine the brightness of the exterior, not the least of which: the camera settings/photographer.

This one looks like it has had some heavy photoshop work to get the sky to be this dark (and cyan /: ) , and it looks ok, but is the most unrealistic of the images, IMHO. (I'm pretty sure it's an (a-hem) rendering.)

Here are some ideas to try.
(It almost all depends on the screen you are using to view the image, really.)

I decided to do a little pp to the beach image before I did the render and raised the vibrance a touch. In twilight I increased the gamma and brightness and I'm pretty happy with the results.
